Aitheantas – Adoptee Identity Rights (“Aitheantas”, “we”, “us” or “our”) is committed to protecting and respecting your privacy.

Below is our Privacy Policy, which should be read carefully to understand how we will use your personal data. 

Who we are

Aitheantas – Adoptee Identity Rights operates this website. We campaign to give Irish adoptees access to their own information on Health, Heritage and History and acknowledgment of their Identity Rights. 

This Privacy Policy applies to information that we collect about you when you:

  • use our website (
  • submit a contact form
  • join our newsletter or Policy Panel 
  • subscribe to updates regarding research conducted by and/or on behalf of Aitheantas. 

Third party Privacy Policies

This Privacy Policy does not apply to third parties that provide services to Aitheantas or are hyperlinked on our site. Thus, we are advising you to consult the respective Privacy Policies of these third-party ad servers for more detailed information. It may include their practices and instructions about how to opt-out of certain options. 

What personal data we collect and why we collect it


When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. 

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here:

After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Contact forms

If you submit a contact request through a contact form, this information is sent to the Public Contacts Department. We will use this information to resolve your query. 

For the purposes of identifying multiple queries, we will store this data for up to 4 years. You can request it’s deletion at any time by contacting us.  

Newsletter subscriptions

If you submit your information through a newsletter subscription form on our website, this information is added to our list. We use this to send you requested updates about Aitheantas – Adoptee Identity Rights’ activities. 

To do this, we use Mailchimp. 

We do not sell your information to third-parties. 


If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Pages and articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

Who we share your data with

Your data will be shared with trusted third parties in order to provide our services, eg: Mailchimp for providing a newsletter service.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

If you fill out a contact form, your details are held indefinitely. This is so we can recognize any follow-up correspondance. 

If you sign up to our newsletter, we will retain your information indefinitely to continue delivering our newsletter. You will always have the option to unsubscribe at the bottom of each email. 

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

We store your data with military-grade encryption. No one except Aitheantas staff and trusted 3rd parties will have access to your data.

What data breach procedures we have in place

In accordance with the GDPR, we will notify affected persons within 48 hours if we discover a data breach has occurred.
